The quest for being’s hidden unity, which lies behind its manifold oppositions, is unavoidable in classical philosophy. The notions of identity and otherness have a long tradition in its history. In many cases, such opposition is comparable to the likes of unity-multiplicity; unity-diversity; identity-difference; finite-infinite. Nicholas of Cusa’s thought addresses this issue in a manner that is deep and original. Both terms are so related that identity can only be understood in otherness and otherness in identity. This Congress’ subject matter intends to unfold itself in two levels. On the one hand, the analysis of this central theme in Cusanus’ thought such as it appears in the different dimensions of his philosophy: Methapysics, Theory of knowledge, Ecclesiology, Politics and Ethics. On the other hand, the understanding of Cusanus’ proposal as it relates to the different historical periods in which the question of the classical opposition has come forward. These broad thematic outlines are the basis from which we have the pleasure to invite you to the Congress, hoping its outcome will be a fruitful and pluralistic dialogue as the one Nicholas of Cusa strove to carry out in his own time.
